Some overseas markets, many of which are paying markets
This is only a small sampling of the magazines and
newspapers available. You will find many more if you type
in poetry markets into Google or another search engine.
Dont forget if you send by email to an overseas
magazine you will need to include an International Reply
Coupon for the appropriate amount in case the poems need
to be returned. International Reply Coupons (IRC) are
available from the post office. If the market will accept
submissions by email this alleviates an extra expense.
If you are serious about poetry you will want to read the
work of others and that means subscribing to magazines
that feature poetry. Your local library should also carry
a selection of poetry books and magazines you can browse
through. If you belong to a writers' group or a group of
poets you might also decide to subscribe to magazines to
pool your resources.
Some organisations that are helpful for poets are:
The Poetry Australia Foundation
School of Creative Arts
University of Melbourne
Parkville, Victoria 3010
Among the benefits of belonging to PAF are a newsletter,
2 issues of the poetry journal Blue Dog and an
annual catalogue that offers discounts on books of poetry
published by a wide variety of Australian publishers.
The Poets Union
PO Box 91
Balmain NSW 2041
Among the benefits are poetry readings and activities,
regular newsletters such as Five Bells and Two
and a Half Bells, which contain reviews of poetry
books, poems, information about competitions, as well as
helpful advice from other poets.
